Silvia Olea Flores, from Tlaquepaque, learned the art of barro betus at the age of seven, watching her grandparents work and absorbing the technique through observation and practice. Her formation was enriched by the guidance of master artisan Serapio Medrano and her grandmother Paula Rodríguez Corona, who taught her how to shape, burnish, and paint the clay—passing down not only technical knowledge but also a profound love for this ancestral craft.
Every piece Silvia creates is handmade and uniquely painted, reflecting originality, tradition, and the distinctive essence of barro betus. Over the years, she has complemented her learning with additional training and has participated in various meaningful projects promoted by Fundación Causa Azul A.C., including the PACMYC 2022 Program, Intervention and Training in Social Economy 2022, the Guardianas de la Cultura Gathering, museum and gallery exhibitions in 2023, as well as the Nosotras and Juntas Somos Imparables exhibitions in 2024.
For Silvia, being a Guardian of Culture is both an honor and a responsibility: to represent and share the knowledge she inherited and to help preserve a technique that embodies identity, tradition, and cultural memory. Each piece she creates is a living testament to gratitude and to the continuity of her lineage.
